ILL3074M The Company of Wolves

For this project the brief was to select and illustrate one scene from  'The Company of Wolves' one of the short stories written in Angela Carter's 'A Bloody Chamber'. This project was set out like Folio Society & The House of Illustration Competition.
and so began the sketches...

then I started focusing on one design...

then the thought came to make the trees look like women bodies.....yeah crazy right!!
and so began the naked lady trees.....

then the wolf.....

I then put the layers together on the light-box to make a forest......

then drew them all up together....

then finally came the pen work.....

and finished....

ILL3074M Penguin Design Award

For our next project we were to use the brief set by the Penguin Random House Design Award competition.
To illustrate a book cover for 'Oranges are not the Only Fruit' written by Jeanette Winterson.
We were to familiarise ourself with the text, its key themes and the characters. Not only did we have to design the front cover but the back as well, we also had to think about the typography. So i read the book (pretty good book) and did a few thumbnails.

This was actually my first idea... I just kept on adapting it..

with clothes and without...

 different layouts....

the text... (i wanted it to look like hand writing, trouble was i kept spelling the words wrong)

and very simple ideas...

Eventually I was just trying lots of different things (excuse to use my new tablet haha), even just little things.. e.g. necklace, hair, shoulders...

I even got my sister involved in the whole process... for the body shapes..

Then I had the shape I wanted finally..

(had a little experiment to see how half an orange would look.... didn't take)

and because i wanted flat colour i decided to do it as a paper-cut...
so i traced my design up and began the cutting...

and finally....

just had to add on the writing for the back and front cover...

ILL3042M Editorial: New Scientist

In this project we were told to pick one of the given scientific articles from the New Scientist magazine.
we had to design one full page illustration and two 'spot' illustrations for the article.
I chose the article which looked into, what would a world without fossil fuels look like?....

so began sketches..

Id say i kinda struggled on this project... but here are the illustration i came up with...

 hamster run lighting..

and wind power...

for the full page illustration....

peddle boat/cars and hamster run traffic lights....

ILL3042M Born Free

Next project we had was Born Free...
which consisted of creating a thaumatrope [A toy that when the strings are twirled quickly between the fingers the two pictures on each side, the images appear to blend into one.] along with a poster to go with it; made to go with the William Blake quote.... "How can the bird that is born for joy, sit in a cage and sing?"

both sides of the thaumatrope... when spun the bird appears to be in the cage.

and the poster....

includes multiple layers of paper.

I tried to make the words look as if they were engraved into the stone.

I even copied William Blake's signature as well into the stone.

ILL3042M Tigerprint

Tiger Print came in and gave us a project. To create a character for a children's story along with some background on them.
i decided to with teddies....
I started off drawing some sketches of different types of bears...

then drew some sketches of different types of teddies and toys..

Along came Benjamin and Milo...
Benjamin: old wise bear that looks after others in their times of weakness.
Milo: a curious little bear with a great big heart.
and the little 5 year old girl that they looked after, Mollie.
i aimed to write a child's story where Milo, Benjamin and a few other teddy friends, go on a journey about the house, to get or make little Mollie a Christmas present all on the night before Christmas.
